The message of world-renowned evangelist, gospel singer, motivational speaker and ordained Minister Gerry Thompson who recently visited the island of Nevis has been the talk of the town. He was an ex-gangster who turned his life around through Christ. According to many Gerry spoke the language of the youth, he understands them and he knows how to connect with them. The top evangelist/singer interacted with students of the Charlestown Secondary at their school assembly on Thursday 2nd of April. He received a very warm welcome from the students who were so happy and attentive to his message. Thompson told students that because of bad choices and negative influences, he lived a life built upon drug abuse and violent crimes for many years. He told them that school is all about learning, “its all about preparing you for life, when you make mistakes out there you don’t get second chances, in here you get second chances, you get to make mistakes and rectify them.” It is better to be prepared for an opportunity that might not come than for the opportunity to come and you are not prepared.
The program hosted by the Out Reach Ministry of Nevis a non-profit newly formed organisation was designed to assist in combating crime and violence in the community. Thompson shared his life testimony with the students, he told them about his bad experience with drugs, drug addict/dealers, gangs, prostitutes, and others for the past 14 years and was recognised with a citation at the first North American Symposium of Crime Stoppers. His work includes evangelising in churches, prisons and schools. He volunteers most of his time in educating young people about the pitfalls of drugs and crime. Thompson’s fundraising has netted over $10M worldwide. He has summarised his 14 years of preaching on his latest DVD and Video entitled ‘Who God Hires, Let No Man Fire’, now available in stores.
Thompson’s fascinating testimony, his renditions of “Why I put the gun down”, “I’m glad to be home again”, “God isn’t through with me yet” and “Just a closer walk” continues to encourage students to make knowledgeable decisions that would lead to productive, positive and meaningful lives. According to the Charlestown Principal Mr. Edson Elliot, Thompson’s visit was timely and needed, “he was able to speak the language that they understand and he connected very well with them through his testimony and song, am happy that he came to share with us.”
Thompson, who was known as ‘Narcotic Blues’ in his gang, explained that in the depth of his journey into negativity, he found himself on the way to kill a man in Florida after a drug deal had gone wrong. On his way to carry out the murder, Thompson was approached by a person preaching the gospel, and suddenly took the time to reconsider how he wanted to live his life. Shortly after his amazing spiritual experience fourteen years ago, Thompson turned his life around and has since been ministering to youth through motivational speeches that inform them of the negative effect crime and drugs can have.

Thank you Lord for not saving this man and annointing him with such wonderful musical giftings. As well as the heart to freely share the love, peace, joy and truth of You! Gerry! You used to live across the street from my family in Brampton when I was a little girl. All I remember is that you were very tall (especially since I was so small), and you filled our home with beautiful music. Just wanted to thank you for leaving an imprint on our hearts with your music :)
